Gulfiend! What you have to remember about the earlier EGC logos is that there was next-to-no enforced standards on how the logo should look. That is why you see various numbers of 'rays', done in numerous colors - not to mention all the different type fonts. The ends of the 'furled banner' also changes on almost every image. That being said - the 'book' doesn't seem to list this globe. But I don't think the Ethyl logo was added to the lens since the lettering is moved up to make room for it. The seller is also offering a refund if you are not satisified. Later . . . Jim P.S. - Once the Ethyl Corporation went to the later EC logo things became more controlled. Always buying Ethyl Globes, Ethyl Single Lenses & Misc Ethyl Items. [This message has been edited by T-way (edited 07-12-2006).]

...while I am aware of the various 'takes' on the Ethyl logo by countless unknown artists working for countless oil companies/ad agencies, this globe really has nothing to do with deregulated usage of the Ethyl logo... ...look CLOSELY at the other lettering in the Ethyl logo, NOT the Ethyl lettering...you'll note that it appears perfect...TOO perfect...it's not hand-lettered, as it would have most likely been back in the day... ...how this happens, is when someone redoing some original artwork gets lazy, (or doesn't have the eye to tell the difference) and just picks a typeface that sorta looks like the original, and resets the type, instead of recreating the original typeface, with all of its 'character'... ...it's done all the time on reproduced ad glass, pump decals, etc...there was a post on Oldgas a few months ago, someone was selling a fake Conoco sign - when you compared the photos, it's obvious... ...does someone out there have a good photo of the Canadian Esso Ethyl globe? It would be most informative to have the two logos side-by-side for further illustrate what I'm talking about... [This message has been edited by gulfiend! (edited 07-12-2006).]

This ethyl gas corporation image was used pre- early 40's. It also uses a Helvetica style type font that was developed in the late 50's. The letter R, C and G is a giveaway. The type style doesn't fit the image. Gulfiend, I think you caught it.

I agree completely that this globe looks like a fake. Look at the off-centered wording inside the parentheses.
I'm pretty certain that the art for this globe was made by some amateur using Photoshop or the likes.
Personally I'd like to see terrible things happen to people who make unmarked repros. Terrible, gruesome things.

I was going to bid on this globe, but thought the ESSO looked funny. Didn't like the way the E fell away from the S. Then I read this tread and I'm very glad I didn't bid on it.

...I e-mailed the seller, and asked:
"your globe looks like new, reproduction lenses on an old body - can you guarantee that the globe is old?"
...the reply:
"NO I CANNOT , MY SIGNS ARE ORIGINAL I WILL BE LISTING A REVOLVING DOUBLE SIDDED LION LIGHT UP SIGN ALSO THE ESSO I ONLY KNOW IT IS 15 AND A HALF INCHES CANNOT TELL YOU ANY MORE THANKS"

I think that Ethyl logo looks horrible. Has anyone ever seen an ethyl logo with those short fat rays coming out of it? I haven't seen one but that don't mean much. That is what caught my eye first. I think it looks suspicious.
