ASIDE FROM THIS AUCTION BEING A REPRO SIGN...DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY THE ORIGINAL AND THE REPRO HAD BLACK COLOR WHERE THE GREEN LENS ON THE SIGNAL WOULD BE? ON MY OWN REPRO, I PAINTED IT GREEN!

ANYONE?

Ha! You guys are missing the obvious!! If the red light is "on", then why is the "GO" sign also up at the same time??

Signal made a "red" and "black" version of the old style traffic light for their pump plates. But if you think about it, only the all black version is technically correct unless you make it green (see photo).

Dick,
Yes, I realize that was the Signal slogan but the traffic light on the sign is still technically incorrect. By the way, does anyone know which version (black vs. red) is rarest and which came first and in what years? I've never heard that story but would guess that the black version was the original.

Back to the repo Signal sign...the seller won't reply to emails and is letting the auction ride. My guess is he's either dishonest or wants to play ignorant by not acknowledging the bad news.

Red was 1st, then the black.
Don't know when or why they changed. In the 60'sor early 70's, they changed to a decal with the split circle Red / GREEN [refered to as the meatball. ??], just before selling out.

Dick, just a tidbit of info in reply to your earlier post.

"How many stop lights have you seen where the RED & GREEN are lighted @ the same time ?"

There is a small town near me (Hartsville, Tn.) that had traffic lights with only 2 lights. Now this was 35+ years ago and they are no longer there. When both red and green were lighted, that was suppose to be yellow or caution. Then it would switch to red or green.

So I have seen these 2 light traffic lights.
