Picked up this 5 gallon pail yesterday and was curious if it you think it was for oil, milk, or some other purpose. It has an arrow inside the neck that reads 5 gallons when filled to here and the badge on it is very hard to read. Also do you think is was from the teens or twenties?
Thanks,
Marshall

Before there were meters on tanker trucks, these were used to count the number of gallons of gasoline/kerosene etc. being delivered to a station. The driver filled the can to the arrow, kept track of the gallons on a indicator wheel mounted on the truck, them dumped the can into the holding tank at the location. Paul www.severngaspumps.com

Early tank trucks usually only had one or two tanks on them. These usually contained gasoline and possibly one grade of oil. If the customer requested 5 gallons of kerosene, or 5 gallons of another grade of oil, it was put in this type of container for delivery.
