Ok, since I'm new to this all..I ran across this on ebay..and its looks like a repro to me..but the seller is trying to selling it as an "original".

Looks fake.

(1) The date on the sign looks handwritten. I noticed other characters in the porcelain (look at the bottom left) that look like it was fired on the sign when made.

(2) Look at the back of the sign. There are discussions in this forum in regards to using chemical agents. Not to clean, but alter the appearance of a surface as to give the impression the sign is older than it really is.

The seller got some of it right. The sign is original. It looks to be from 1934, note the J.34, on the other lower corner. The sign is French. Esso S.A.F. is still a huge player in France, marketing under Esso and Mobil tradenames. Condition is still the main consideration. This sign has some flaws. As a new player in this crazy hobby you should be aware that most folks are not that excited about foreign signs. I personally like them, but I am not in the majority. I started out with a less than stellar Gargoyle sign when I got into this. I do think the sign is worth about what he has bid on it now. I wouldn't push this one much more.

Isn't there 2 dates on this sign? In the left hand corner a "handwritten"(?) 1919 and on the right hand side J. 34. I am a novice on most aspects of our hobby, but something doesn't look right with this sign, to me. I sent a message to the seller, hopefully he'll respond.

Looks right to me... Not that 1919 though-disregard that ,ask him if it'll come off.

That sign is real, that date is someone's guess as to the year, and would asume it will come off. I sold one on e-bay a year ago, it went for 250.00, in a little better shape.

The seller has added info on the sign telling biggers that it is a 1934 sign. So he wants to get the correct info out there.
