Things have gotten a little series lately, how about a little Petro Trivia.
1. What brand of gas was sold ad the station that was blown up in the 1983 movie "Christine?"
2. What brand of gas was sold at Goobers station in the Andy Griffin color shows (I believe it was the same in the black and white ones also)?
3. What type of pumps were used at Goobers station on the same color shows?
4. Non-related question. Why do people complain about the cost of gasoline at the station, then buy a 12 oz. bottle of water for $1.50?

Don't know the answers to the questions Jack, but as to the comparison between a gallon of fuel & a bottle of water, I hear people make this statement constantly about coffee, water, milk, etc. My answer to that question is people are upset because they aren't buying 50 gallons of coffee, milk, or water every week. If they were, I'd expect the price would go down.

I'm not real good at numbers or data but it would be real interesting if someone did a comparison....lets say the cost of an average house, vehicle and gas in say 1950 compared to today and see which has the biggest percentage of increase over the years.

Jack- The answer to # 2 is Acme. I think the pumps in #3 were M&S 70. I agree with Seth about #4.---Greg

Here are the answers:
1. I'm a little surprise that no one answered this one. What a great movie, from a Steven King book about a 58 Plymouth Fury. The answer is Mobico (Looks like the first three letters of Mobil and the last three letters of Texaco.
2. Acme is correct
3. Three others may be correct depending on the the episode, but the ones I remember were Wayne 90s.
Thanks, I do this again when things get slow.

Question 4...always a controversy!! If you guys will do your homework, you'll find that the price of gasoline hasn't kept pace with inflation. Matter of fact, the downstream (refining and marketing) has been a lousy business with a very low rate of return for quite some time. Only in the last couple of years have the refiners made a decent return on investment.

Why? Too much capacity and over regulation for many years. Now, when more refining capacity is needed, no company wants to go out on the limb due to the huge investment, government regulation and the "not in my backyard" syndrome.

So, be prepared to pay high prices for a long time to come. For those of you with technical interest, check out Hubbert's peak production theory. You may get the sense that high oil & gas prices are here to stay long term (short term is anybody's guess). If it's any consolation, the Brits and Europeans have been paying $4.00+ a gallon since the 1970's. You can only hope your children have alternative energy sources.

Cheers!!

Paul

Lets Put this in perspective... Gas at $3.00 a gallon is less outgo (relative to inflation and wages) than it was in the early 60's. What we made ($1.10 to $2.00+ an hour) and what we paid.. (30 to 37 cents a gallon) is more (relatively speaking) than what we are paying today. Your wages today (unless minimum) should allow you to buy a gallon of gas for less than the 20 minutes of work it took back then. Yes.. gas prices suck. But so does the cost of housing.. etc. The car I drive today cost me more than twice the price I paid for my 1st home in 1972. Its all relative... and I think we all can relate.

Minuteman asked for a comparison of various costs over the years. There have been several studies that show gasoline prices have gone up much less than other costs of living. Check out the Chevron webpage which expands on this issue (scroll down to Relative Cost of Gasoline)...
