I was talking with a oil can collector today. I noticed a few cans in his collection with barcodes. I mentioned that Joseph Woodland who invented the barcode passed away late last year. We started to wonder when barcodes started to appear on oil cans. Does anyone here have knowledge of that?

...the barcode tech was invented in the 1950's - but the tech wasn't applied until the 1970's...
Looking for better Gulf items: signs, globes, cans and paper - especially porcelain Gulf flanges, and Gulf A-38 & A-62 ad glass...

So with this information is it safe to say that any oil can with a barcode cannot be older then 1975 or so. My guess is that some products like oil and some smaller companies would have been a couple years behind others in using the new invention.

Since it's a bar code, many people consider this "modern era". So when you see a bar code, I don't try to decide when a company first used it....rather I see it as, it doesn't pre-date the 70's. If I need to be more preicse than that, I look for other methods of dating within the bar code era.
