I know this has been discussed to death, but I have done a search, but am either entering the wrong search info or just a dumb bunny...Arrrg. Please help and point me toward a discussion on cleaning a painted tin sign. I was going to use barkeepers friend and perhaps a Mr Clean pad. I know I should be able to find this...Help...LOL..Thanks.

tin is tough! Some will take abuse and some wont. Just test what ever you are using.

if the paint isnt severely dried out and flaking, I suggest warm soap and water first rather than anything with grit.
If that works, you can try a little fine polishing compound on a damp rag and in a small spot. If any color starts coming off on the rag, you are going too hard on it. Red seems to come off the easiest. compound is best for white. if its other paint(on top the graphics) or something other than dirt, it is rather dificult to remove it and not the paint too. goofoff would be needed but it can remove paint.
Start off in a small spot, slowly and cautiously. if the paint comes off, stop. You'll have to enjoy it the way it is.
Do you have a pic of it?

Alex, that red looks like its either been repainted a while back or its just faded weird. Its very uneven looking, almost watercolor like in the picture.
I would work on the white first, I would be very cautious with the black green or red. They are a little faded as it is, definitely NO Scotch pad.
With the dings already in it, I not sure how much improvement you can make.
I have had sucess with fine polishing compound and a damp rag in the white areas-GENTLY
