My .02 is why not just keep the original and have a 42 inch round piece of steel cutout and painted to match the original sign? To me value would be the same either way.

It's my understanding that all you really end up with is a painted copy anyway. Now if there's a way to really replace the missing porcelain then that would be totally different in my eyes. I'm probably not up to speed on the different repair methods out there.

Again.... just my .02.

The topic about weather or not it is a good idea or not to restore an original sign has been brought up multiple times.

The question asked was not if it was a good idea or not, but who does the best job.

It isn't about value...it is about final cost. This sign needs to be touched up, not totally restored and will never be passed off as original if sold.I'm putting it outside and if it is stolen...I won't lose any sleep over it.

Jim, Us sign painters have become obsolete. Everything is done with computer these days.
If you want to tackle a "repair on a sign it is not all that difficult. ( I won't use the word restore here as there is no agreement as to what that means.) Repairs are done with body filler and it is only necessary to work on the bad parts of the sign. A total re paint is really not necessary to get a decent looking displayable sign.
Case in point:

The before and after of the powerine sign I did awhile back.
All the original porcelain of the before picture is untouched - left as is. The only repaired-filled- repainted parts are the damaged areas. This is not a fool proof job and was never meant to be. If a person can't tell it has been repaired then they need glasses.
Admittedly, I have some 40 years experience sign painting so the lettering and painting isn't all that difficult. The most difficult part is paint match and blend to surrounding areas.
It's late, I'm breaking away for now.

here's a step by step i did on a complete overhaul of a phillips 66 sign recently. doing spot repairs works the same, just make sure you have a really good match on your colors!

That is what I am talking about. That looks good ! I appreciate the way the paint and stains were duplicated to replicate age and "patina".

I know the question was who is the best and i can tell you with confidence it's not me but if i was going to restore it, i would only touch up the spots that need it. Here are a couple that i touched up and i agree that the hardest part is paint match. I would only do it to a sign that was in very bad condition.

That's a total re-paint.

You might as well of started off with a new piece of steel and have me make you a new decal to fit. MUCH less expensive and you still end up with the same thing - a new sign.

Later . . .

Jim

You can get to Dawn by way of chesse man at his site link.
T-way is correct total repaint,is what it is. I havn't had her do any but have two transfer truck signs I'm still on the fence about. I have had several people tell me she is more reasonable then others price wise, and does great work.

Having a sign repainted is for Your enjoyment only. Signs that have been repainted, when sold at auction DO NOT sell for what it cost to have them repainted. Just something else to keep in mind.
