Gas bashes and collector swap meets seem to the norm in more populated parts of the country and appear to generate a lot of interest.I'd love to go to some but we are just too far away, and further, there are not enough collectors of gas & oil in this area to even think about such a thing at at a local level.

I think the best way for local collectors to sell off a few things (a lot of us don't sell much),and introduce new people to the hobby would be for a couple of us to just run ads in the local paper advertising "Gas & Oil Garage Sale".

There are enough of us who would do it,I could add vintage auto parts, coke machines and more, that we just might be able to pull it off and have fun doing it.

My point is, if you want to get retail prices for some stuff,or for that matter just move it,in many cases you have to go to the general public at a local level. To do that you have to advertise to them.I realize that we will have to knock some prices down to attract attention.

Have any of you tried that on a SMALL local scale? What do you think of the idea?

I Think it is a great idea, You may be very surprised how many people in your area collect Gas and Oil also, I have put small ads in local papers sporadically and have gotten several responses from LONG time collectors who just keep to themselves within 20 miles of me.

Everything has to start somewhere and I think KZ1000 is correct in that you may be suprised at the response! I keep an ad going in my local newspaper for things I'm interested in buying and I've met many local enthusiasts and collectors because of it. If its done in a pleasant and enthusiastic manner, it will probably get larger every year! Go for it!!!

Hi Guys,

I didn't explain enough in my original post.Actually,I've been doing it for years on my own and have been sucessful in both selling and introducing new people to the hobby. My thought now is to expand the practice to include more local collectors and turn it into more of a shopping experience for beginners by offering a more complete line of collectibles that I can provide by myself.

OR, we could have a National Gas and Oil Yard Sale Day where people all across United States would hold a Yard Sale simutaneously on the same weekend, We could advertise in all the Craigslists in all regions. Maybe Jim could give us all T-Shirts to sell to promote OldGas.

Hi Ric,

Will do.I've talked to several of the guys and it's coming togather. My shop, you've seen pictures of it,as the advertised facility with what should be an intersting variety of stuff.

It will be in the spring when the landscape greens up and its warmer.

Thanks guys for your comments.Lets just say you helped get some guys to "stop sitting the fence".!!!
