Hi Guys, I'd really appreciate everyone's input here. I've been trying to find a rough mobil pump sign for a patina pump I'm putting together. I was thinking of trading for this one, but because it doesnt have a maker mark or year and the back is black (haven't seen that) I wasn't sure of it's authenticity. I should say in no way is the owner trying to mislead me he seems like a nice stand up guy. I also know who owned it before, also a stand up guy....I'm inclined to trust them I just wanted to get some other opinions.

Thanks guys...now just to find a way to bow out gracefully from the trade without telling the poor guy that I think his sign isn't legit.

How about trying to educate the seller why it's no good so it doesn't get sold to an unsuspecting buyer?

Well he wasn't trying to sell it or be pushy, he seems like a good guy honestly. If I don't do the trade I suspect he will just hold onto it....and honestly I trust everyone's opinions on here (and plan to take the advice) but I am no voice of authority on signs so I don't know if I should be the one telling him what he does or doesn't have

Well here's my 2 cents.......
I do think it's genuine myself. The plate is a "thin border" version made from 1954 to 1962 according to the Mobil collectors book, but the latest dated one I have personally seen is IR60, or 1960. On these plates, the IR date should be at the lower point. (which on this poor example that area is void of any porcelain obviously) At any rate, quite a few of these known originals have the grey speckled porcelain backs. I don't think my eyes are that bad that the sign back in question would qualify as "black" by any means. I think whoever took the pics the resolution is darker than it should be, especially against that light maple flooring, but it sure looks like the grey speckled back to me.

Below are pics of a IR55 plate in my collection. It's a scarcer version with the "MADE IN U.S.A." at the lower right point. I've only seen this marking on some IR55 plates. My other examples are too high up on the wall and I'm not getting the ladder out, so this was close at hand and has the thin border and the grey speckled back for illustration. I generally say to never buy a "qualifying" Mobilgas pp that should have a IR date code that doesn't have one, but in this case I think it's correct, but I'm obviously in the minority on this one. I doubt you would have to pay or have much trade value in this sign due to the condition, which I understand it's what you're looking for but due to condition and the lack of the date code I don't think anyone would value it that high regardless of perceived originality.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Darin

I has a good look for a patina pump even if it is a repop. I looks original to me. If you are comfortable with the trade do it for the look. If it is original it does not have a high value for the condition so it should not matter.

That's not a fake its the West coast version which always has the black border instead of blue. Good luck hunting!

I find it sad that veterans on this forum disagree with one another about what is fake anymore or not. Especially when it comes to a simple Mobil Pump plate. The future for this stuff is not bright because there will come a time when people aren’t absolutely sure what is authentic or not. This thread would lead you to believe that time is basically now.

I think the pictures Darin provided show the closest example to the one I am considering and as he mentioned his is a rare version with the "made in the USA" mark. Ultimately I think I will base my decision off of the additional pictures I receive and the coloring on the back. As Jhasss63 mentioned it is becoming harder and harder to determine authenticity....I think the condition of the signing is complicating this even further. Again, I want to thank everyone for their input and providing thoughts/opinions/info.

-Sean
