I recently shipped a large sign-(48" by 36") to Michigan from N.Ca..Rate for FEDEX was $24,00 and change cheaper tha UPS.

I chose FEDEX!

For smaller items going to surrounding states you can't beat the USPS, especially using their Flat Rate boxes. But when the item gets large and going across country then it's FedEx hands down. I have both their apps on my phone and do price comparisons very quickly, you really have to check to know who's the least expensive.
