First let me say, this is not a post written from experience. This is a question!

So often I've seen people date thermometers using the little 2 digit codes often found near the bottom of the scales.
But here is a thermo with "54" on it. But this more modern Amoco logo didn't exist in 1954.
Any help appreciated!!

Steve, those little numbers at the base of the thermometer are the tube number, not a date .. ... cool

The phone numbers can help with dating as well. Obviously that wouldn’t be from the 50’s with the now standard phone number it has.

I generally regard any thermometer with Celsius units as 1970's or later.
