I have a 56 Chevy Bel-Air with a Rochester 2 barrel carb but I'm thinking of switching to a 4 barrel for more power and to help with cold starts. That said, my transmission is a 700R4 with the kick down cable and linkage so...will I need to do any adjustment to the linkage if I switch to a 4 Barrel? Also what else will I need?? bigger air cleaner cover?

Thanks for any help you can offer

You'll need a different intake

May need a different bracket for the kick down cable, depending on carb manufacturer.

How big is your engine? I am guessing somewhat of a stock motor if it still had a 2bbl on it.

You will need to match the CFMs of your new carburetor with the engine you are using. If you have the stock 265 c.i. V8 a 400-500cfm would work. 327/350 small blocks something between 500-600cfm. 427/454 big blocks probably something in the 700-800cfm range.

A 800cfm on a 265 wouldn't help, it will actually hurt your performance as it would be "over carbed" and couldn't pull the airflow to take advantage of something that big.

Make sure your kickdown cable is properly adjusted once you put the new carb on. Basically, pull your throttle wide open with the engine off and then pull the kickdown cable out as far as it will go and tighten the set screw. At least this is how it works on the TH350 trannies. Wouldn't hurt to Google adjusting for the 700R4 to see if the process is different though.

Yeah, I've just been reading stories about bad things that happen when you dont properly adjust the kickdown cable, I'm rebuilding aod transmission, and its apparently very critical to get that adjustment correct.
