Your information is partially correct Paul.

The globe in your photo is the Mobilgas Ethyl produced by Vacuum Oil Company from 1928-1933 (dates according to the globe guide book). The globe obviously predates the Socony and Vacuum Oil Companies merger in 1931. IMO the design was held over for a couple years in the former Vacuum Oil Company market after the merger while Socony-Vacuum was setting new imaging standards for the stations.

At any rate, where the 2-3 years use of the ethyl globe enters in your statement is in regards to the first ethyl globe Socony-Vacuum issued with Pegasus on it. The globe book dates the ethyl with Pegasus as being made from 1934 to 1936. You see the larger ethyl globes on metal bodies pretty regularly, but to find one on glass is pretty tough. I can count on one hand the 13.5" ethyl globes with Pegasus I've seen in my 13+ years in the hobby. Below is mine and I'm very lucky to have it. And after the short ethyl run, yes, it did become Mobilgas Special in 1936.
I hope I've helped a bit with your question,
Darin
I've also included a photo of my original poster from the General Petroleum territory announcing the release of the "new" Mobilgas ethyl in 1934.

The Ethyl are pretty small, looks like they might fit a Gilbarco 70. They came out in 34.

They fit a Bennett 76, so whatever size that might be.

Thank You Mark, to me tells a story when times were really tough in the USA. Mobil disturber looking for business, convinces Shell dealer to sell Moblil. You don't even have
to go thru the expense of painting the pump, just slap a Mobil decal on it was good enough

...and apparently the place didn't sell Mobil long either - or they bought new pumps shortly thereafter - because your pump spent more time indoors, than out...
