Hello Everyone!

I am going to start the POTM for September a little bit early because I am going to be out of town away from my computer for the beginning of the month for Labor Day. So shall we get started! The pump of the month this month is the Fry "Mae West" visibles! These pumps have some absolutely beautiful designs with their curvy body, hence the nickname Mae West. Here are the pumps included in the list.

-Guarantee 17: 1918-mid 1920's. This is the 5 gallon version, hand crank. It could be had with an internal pumping unit, external pump attachment, and even come with no base.
-Guarantee 117: 1925. Hand crank 10 gallon version. Also could've had a Wayne or Rush top conversion.
-Guarantee 77: 1920's. Hand crank, 10 gallon.

I hope you all can share your Mae Wests! And thank you Jack Sim for yet another great book!! Take care everyone.

This was my very first pump that a neighbor farmer gave me in 1970. He was going to scrap it. It was originally installed on his farm in early 1930's. Twenty years later, (1990), after I got it, he found the globe that came with it. Perfect blue original cylinder on pump with FRY etching on it. It's a keeper!

Here is an extremely early external 5 gallon Fry I recently acquired. Some of the differences you will see on this versus the later external Fry's are:
-External bracket goes straight out versus dropping down. With the bracket straight out the pump handle is to tall to have a base on the pump,
so I assume there never would of been one.
-The cylinder glass is almost 1/2" thick
-The skins, door, top and globe holder are all cast iron. top is completely different than the later tops.
-The totalizer guage has all the small indicator hands versus the later counter. Says Guaranteed Measure and different casting than later totalizers.
-The pump has a large round cork at the inside top that accompanied some sort of vacuum system
to suck the gas in. When you open the door you see some of the vacuum mechanism. No idea how it works.
-The rods that hold the top on the cylinder has a slotted screw top versus threaded and a nut.
-Notice the pump has a connector flange on the top and bottom versus most externals you see have the pipe threaded straight into the pump.

Any comments on the vacuum/ air pressure system and how it works would be great.

Eric
