I'm restoring a Rush K. The rods which the gallon markers are mounted on are rusty. I assume these were plated originally. Does anyone know how they were plated?

I looked very closely at mine and they are rusty as well with no evidence of any plating. My guess is they were always bare metal.

If they were plain steel, I could just clear coat them. However, I am concerned I will be redoing them every few years. I don't want to keep taking the markers off the rod and risk metal fatigue and breakage.
