Hello All,
I picked up this odd street sign a few weeks ago. I've tried researching it but the only information I can find is about the classic porcelain shield shaped route signs.
Has anyone seen street signs like this? What year would it date from approximately? Are they very valuable? It's "reverse embossed" and is quite a heavy sign.
Thanks for any information anyone can provide. I just like knowing a bit about what I display!

These shield street/stop signs were fairly popular late 20s to 1935. I went through some of my old catalogs and found at least 12 companies advertising some type of shield shaped parking or stop sign. In 1935 MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) was adopted by most states and it specified that stop signs to be octagons with black or red lettering on yellow.

Value $150-$200 (higher for original paint), they show up on ebay every now and again.

Sold $171:

I hope that helps!

Aaron, thank you very much for the information. This is exactly what I was wanting to learn. I'm pretty sure it is original paint on this one. Silver first coat, the red on top. I was leaving it as is regardless.
