I have a chance to buy a National A-1 pump. I've seen a couple of pics and can see it needs face plates, ad glass, top piece of trim, door spears and probably some small parts I can't see in the pics. Does anyone repop these parts? Has anyone restored this pump that could give me some advice? Any ideas on value? Looks fairly straight, no rust through but surface rust and some old paint, sight glasses look to be ok.
Thanks for your help?
Rod

ron scobie pops the faces and they are beautiful. he also has the tags, just got a set. jim treadway made the spears and return stainless to the face. good luck on the other stainless, no one is making it yet as far as i know. if you don't have the very top spreader bar, it can be easily made if you have one to copy. mike slama is popping the glass, and got the arotane from him. check it out on vintage logos. good luck

Rod:

As 41again mentioned, I produce correct 'short' Door Spears and VR Trim for the National A-1. You can see a photo of the parts on the web site.

Ron Scobie has the face plates, but as far as I know, no one is re-boping the 'ad glass' trim at this time.

Later . . .

Jim

Rod,
If the pump is reasonable, BUY IT.

When I started buying pumps, VERY FEW PARTS were avaible. The parts you need will either be repo'd, or you will find a way to make them. I DID. The 1st 36B I bought was missing the TOP, I made one with WOOD [still have it on a pump].

I would purchase the pump. My dad bought one and there are a few parts available. I got lucky this past weekend and traded for a set of doors with all the original meter glass, and all trim top and bottom still on them. These are pretty pumps restored, good luck and post photos when you get it.

Phil

Thanks, Phil

Here are some pictures of Rod's National A-1 gas pump:

Just don't see a lot of those good looking A-1 pumps. Gotta save the ones we find.

Well, the owner took these pics. I haven't seen the pump yet. It's rougher than he led me to believe. He said he'd let me know in a few days what he wants for it.
Any ideas as to the value?
Thanks for posting the pics, Jim.

If both bezels are there and good and you are good with body work I would say $100 would be all. If you had one that needs parts and they are there it worth whatever the parts would cost you. Nothing is ever completly ruined, anything can be fixed. If youre doing the bodywork then try and fix it, but if youre going to pay a professional, it would cost more than it would be worth to straiten it out. Of course these are just my oppinions, and they meen absolutly nothing. But I would pay no more than $100 Good luck and let us know if you get it.

Rod,

My dad bought a really straight one that was missing the top for the globe holder and the trim pieces for the ad glass. He got the pump for a very reasonable price. I would agree wtih everyone else and say $100 would be about it. It can be resurected from the dead with alot of work. That is what this hobby is about, bringing the old back and making it look like new. Let us know what you do. PS, I will be getting your parts off this weekend and shipped early next week.

Thanks, Phil

Thanks, Phil

Value ? If all the castings are present, including the site glass manifold, $200. With both sides(even rotted), the hose outlet cover, and two face frames, I would be drooling when I handed him the $300.

Thanks to all of you who gave me their opinion of this pump's value. I realize pics don't tell the whole story either. I asked the seller if both bezels were there but he has been too busy to check on it. I asked him what he wanted for it but didn't ever give me a figure. I offered him a $100 if both bezels were there. He said it was worth way more than that. I'm going to go look at it in the morning. I'm hoping we can work something out.
Thanks again for your help.

Well, I finally got the deal made on the pump and got it home. With a little tweaking and some baling wire, I got the doors to shut. I guess I either love a challenge or can't afford straight pumps. I see it as having a lot of potential even though it needs a lot of work and some parts.
I'm sending some pics later to post.
Thanks again for everyone's input on my pump.
Rod
