In this era of debating, political issues, full or empty, guts or no guts, well here's one for you from my heart.
Time and again I've seen people refer to oil cans as "Advertising".
I bring up a different argument.
Examples of advertising would be print ads in magazines and newspapers, billboards, the signs we all love so much, and a few other things.
However,
Oil cans, are "packaging".
Just a thought from the heart.

The artwork on the cans ect., were designed to grab you or make a statement-hence"Advertising".

Les,
I think that was actually 04:47 my time.
Aren't you in advertising? I was hoping you would cast an opinion.

BTW, I need to get over there and buy you that burger!

Steve, I actually do design/branding on packaging and product styling.

This debate has a long history. In my business it is said that packaging has about .5 seconds to catch a consumers attention. Then brand loyalty factors in so there are those that contend that it is advertising in some way. Me, for oil cans specific at least the ones we like it was just branding to make the consumer feel as if they were getting the best - quality product or to confirm that they were getting the one they were loyal to. Advertising has the opportunity to present more product information and there is no impulse involved. Each needs the other to succeed.

You my friend have opened up a can of worms that hopefully has cool packaging.
And YES it would be great to see the Steve and Steve road show again. The door is always open and Kathy said hi. Les

I understand why your not sleeping but poking a bear will not help...LOL

I agree as most, once the oil cans arrived they were placed in station front windows and on fuel delivery islands to catch peoples attention as did the pump signs. Oil delivery was upgraded to eye catching standards when the cans arrived. And going by the extreme of some cans logos and print work, it was taken pretty serious! Lucky for us!

Interesting thread, Steve!

I hope I am not stealing the thread with the question below …

Why Gas/Oil companies from 1900-1950 did come up with the BEST logos.

Could it have been due to the availability of freelance artists doing art work by hand (lithograph) at very reasonable prices?

Packaging, and advertising...

I'd like to know what the percentage is of car owners that buy oil/change their own oil today? I'd bet most wouldn't even know how.

Sell me your Gilmore Oil Co. stuff...

I change my own oil, and unfortunately I don't look at packaging. I look for the cheapest price. There are no fancy graphics today anyway, just a few stripes.

So your saying I purchased the item because I wanted the can, not the oil?
