The sign that 63shelby posted above is the Canadian version from P&M.

I am definitely not an expert in signs. There is no doubt in my mind that I have bought something that that wasn't original that I thought was. So I appreciate all the oversaw ions reagarding these signs. I know that if I come across one of these signs I will now know what to look for. I'm guessing the best place to purchase signs would bec Oldgas or a petro swap meet. Thanks again for the information.

As has been mentioned, not having in hand makes it harder, but the one 63 Shelby posted, if it is P&M, weren't they dated and manufacturer stamped? It is still possible to get grommets, though it seems the old zinc type are more difficult to locate. Look at the grommet hole at three o'clock on the one 63 Shelby posted. I personally think it's strange that there is damage that goes under the grommet and across the hole. Looks to me like grommets were added after the inflicted damage to give sign age and "patina". I know that not having grommets does not always mean it's a new sign, as having grommets does not always mean it's an old sign. Reproductions have been around a long time, but the people who make these are getting really good at making these. As Mark says, one needs to slow down and hold onto your money until you take a good look at it. I have been guilty of, and have gotten burned, by not slowing down and studying sign. It's hard sometimes when half a dozen people are breathing down your neck hoping you will put sign down. I would say the majority of us have got caught up in the moment of frenzied buying and had we studied a little longer would have put sign down, and spent our money on something else, lol! After 27 years of collecting, between the prices, pickers, and reproductions, I enjoy the hobby less and less each passing year. I guess it's the friendships made over the years that keep me coming back. Pat

...hmm...I just noticed that the black line on this sign, goes straight across, AND under the 'nozzle'...on the other signs pictured, the black line is continuous, and goes around the 'nozzle'...

On most the P & M signs I've seen, they are dated and p & m stamp are in the lower right hand corner, a lot are faint.

Now that we've discussed this, I think they're all fake. A bunch of new ones ebay today.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-1954-Po...=item2a533e8726 Look at the number 2, anything with a 54 date and a circlr R trade mark you better run.

You and me both.

Texaco made signs where grommets didn't magically fall off; not that I've seen in my years of collecting

The spray looks off too.

Could go on and on...
