Thanks Peter. That Ortho Shoe sign is an art deco delight.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! Cant wait to see the next batch.
Neat to see the transom window opened on the Tavern.....I can just imagine the hot air being vented out at the ceiling level with them. The tavern looks like an art deco beauty as well, and the Orpheum marquee, wowsers! Thanks Peter.
Darin
Thank you guys . I will keep them coming each week .
Great thread, looking forward to seeing more and possibly adding to it.
Peter you get glimpses of the stone work on the buildings and there is some real nice work done there as well. Downtown SLC is an underappreciated architectural gem.
There is a lot of great old buildings and houses still here in Salt Lake but sadly so much of what you see and are going to see is gone forever .Fred I hope all is well with you and your family. Thanks Peter
These are both beautiful and a little depressing at the same time. The amount of effort that went in to making these storefronts and advertising beautiful is amazing. We seem to have peaked aesthetically about 75 years ago. Nothing we build today looks like this anymore...that's the depressing part. Thanks for sharing though.
BrianH
I agree totally Brian , I am also sad when I look at what was once here and now is gone .
There are laws that prevent this today even if it is cost justified advertising.
Art and detail and quality can be done safely but for the most part it is not in todays world . What we see now is cheep quick and ugly .
Great photos Peter. I really like the "Used Cars" signs. I just finished restoring this large OK neon earlier this year for a guy out west. Same as the one in your photo that the guys are standing around and touching. I never understood what compels people to want to walk up and touch neon tubes, but see grown adults did that in the 1950's too. I guess people are just drawn to them like bugs! Several years ago I had one of those large round "OK" signs that they are pointing to in the other photo. It was a 3-piece sign and 10' in diameter. A friend of mine wanted it worse than I did, so sold it to him. Thanks for sharing the photos!
Great job , and I'm glad you like the old pictures.
The Coca Cola and Drug store signs are awesome. They dont make them like that anymore.
Brian
I ran across this photo of that 10' diameter "OK" sign like Peter posted above. I purchased this around '98 or '99. When I brought it home, I climbed on my parents garage roof to get the photo. Had my wife (we were not even married yet) sit next to it for some perspective of size.
To paraphrase "they don't make them like that coffee shop bowling sign anymore" must have been a big blow or a strike to knock that sign down.
Looking at your pics never fails to make me smile...thanks for continuing to post them!
My pleasure . I still have a lot left . Thanks and have a good weekend.
That BBQ sign is awesome! Thanks for continuing to post these pics. Keep them coming.
Peter those signs are all great but that bbq sign is calling my name for some reason...LOL
And you have more! Did you burgle a photo store back in the day? And this is just the SLC area?
Fred and Kelly's BBQ looked like a great place to hang out!

Hello Fred , all these pictures are from locations here in Utah but yes most are from the Salt Lake valley area . I'm glad you guys are enjoying them .
Fisher Beer on Tap, that was in Salt Lake Peter?
Hard to find any beer places there...
Ha Ha Kim , you would be suprised I think there's more beer drinking going on here than most parts of the country . Not that I would know personally .

Do you know what the globes are above the Lincoln Highway sign on the pole on the right hand side of the last photo? I can't make them out.

Sorry but I can't make out what they say either.
as usual sweet stuff Peter....love the matching heads on the theatre entrance
Glad you like them Fred , I still have a lot more to show . Have a good weekend
My gosh I'd love to see the Coconut Grove building in a daytime shot. This art deco collector/fan is in heaven looking at that feast for the eyes!! It's sad to know that by the 50's/60's the deco style was so "dated" that the majority of facades in the style were removed, or in the case of my local area, refaced in aluminum coverings. The wrought iron work, stone work, neon.....there's just very little of it left to see today.
Darin
I love the look to Darin .Here are a couple of pictures I found inside the Coconut Grove when they had a truck display on the dance floor .
Much larger inside than I would've expected from what we can see of the outside....pretty cavernous space! It certainly has the tropical look, haha. Thanks for posting the additional pics you have of it.

Made them smaller?
Great pics, love that bus and tow truck !!
Great pics as always Peter. I took 5 semesters of photography way back in college and I've noticed your pics are all crystal clear and the majority of them have every tone from bright white to dark black (the sign of a good B&W photograph). Most of these were probably taken with medium or large format cameras by a photographer who knew what he was doing - they always look great.
Keep them coming and thank you for posting for all of us to see.... great pics of stations, motorcycles and history.
here's an early one
