This is a sign I've owner for many years. The one side is very good with a few chips. The other side has a couple of black swirl marks which are on top of the porcelain. I tried lacquer thinner but it didn't cut it. $2000. Pick up here (Monroe, Michigan, fifteen miles north of Toledo, Ohio and thirty five miles south of Detroit, just off I-75).

Bar keepers friend and fine steel wool works great for rust etc.

Good looking sign...getting tough to find in good condition. I agree a little bar keepers friend and plenty of elbow grease would probably take the swirls marks right off.

Seems like I remember the name but don't know what it is nor where you find it.

You should be able to find Barkeepers Friend at grocery stores, Walmart, Target, Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

Personally not my first choice. It tends to dull the porcelain in my experience.

So what is your first choice then?

Automotive buffing compound for me. I use the heavier stuff.

I have had some good results using WD40 and steel wool. Seems to dissolve and lift off residues with minimal abrasion. Have not found anything to address signs that were subjected to high heat though. I have a nice porcelain flange sign that was used as a blocker between a wood stove and a wood pile. What a shame. Any ideas on that situation appreciated.

Roger,

I am interested in your sign. I sent you a private message. It is the blinking envelope at the top of this page, near your name.

Thanks,
Steve

Regardless of what works best for you try using gel-gloss on it as a polish, makes your sign shine like a diamond in a billy goats butt!

Find it at lowes or home depot--very reasonable priced.

Frank, does the Gel-Gloss leave any residue you can feel with your fingers? And, does it get smeary? I haven't used this product, and would like to give your suggestion a try. Oops...sorry if we're stealing Roger's thread by accident. But, we do keep bringing it up to the top! Thanks. John

My experience is that it does not leave any residue that you can feel and it does not smear. It works great in the shower, stove top, granite etc.We have used it for
many years.

Try it,i think you will be pleased.
