What kind on gun is your painting gun of choice: Gravity Feed, or Canister type? And why do you prefer one verses the other?

Jason,
I use a hvlp canister gun hooked up to a heated, dryed, filtered, metered air supply device. Not an air compressor. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner and uses a 1" diameter air supply hose. Great finish, very little overspray, and no moisture in the paint. I found this system to work the best. Uses less than half the paint. The paint is applied to the pannel not dispersed into the air. This means less waste and more savings.

I too use the same paint system. It works great. I also chose this type of system as I was not an experienced painter. This one is enviormental friendly and reduces runs and fish-eyes. My two cents! Good luck

Gas pump guys, What does a system like this run? Sounds like it could be expensive. Jason... what kinda money are you wanting to spend? I have a Binks 2001 I got free because it was apart and in a box. I took it to the local paint store and they rebuilt it and put a couple of new parts in it and it cost me $50 and it works great.
I looked at it like this... if you are going to do much painting I would buy the better stuff but if it's going to be a couple of pumps a year than maybe something cheaper. Don't buy something to cheap though! Why buy the very best roofing gun to roof a house once? LOL Let use know what you end up doing.

The system I bought cost about 475.00 about five years ago. A co. called TIP sold it to me. The are a suppler of Scatblast sandblasters.

Good luck,

I strongly recommend gravity feed guns over siphon feed guns. There is less internally to keep clean and the paint flows natually down in a gravity paint gun. HVLP and reduced pressure HVLP compliant guns use less incoming air pressure. Siphon guns need that pressure to suck the paint up from the cup. Paint will come out of a gravity gun with little or even no air pressure. All my old siphon guns are in storage, sold or on display as an antique.

One thing that has changed over the years is the theory that you need to lay out a maximum amount of paint to get it to smooth out to a glossy finish. The real truth is that atomization, the breaking up of the spray into microscopic droplets, is the key to smoothness. We used to think that the largest air cap and fluid nozzle would do the best job. Modern paint actually does best when sprayed by a high atomization gravity paint gun that has a 1.3 tip or smaller. That works opposite the old logic, but it really is true. I use Sata 2000 and Devilbiss Plus 1.3 gravity guns every day at work. You may not want high dollar guns for occasional work. You can find "knock-off" copies of these guns for sale at auto paint suppliers for way less that spray pretty decent.

No question that clean, filtered, dried air gives better spray results by far with any spray gun.

Hey GPH and Rob, where can I find more info on the paint systems your using? I've never seen one and I'm interested.

Here is a very cool paint spray setup from my collection. Don't need no stinkin' compressor or turbine. Just put the special fitting in place of a spark plug on your car and spray away. You can't beat that $5.95 price either.
