OLDGAS members .... "age poll" .... 2021 .. ...
It will be neat to see the 2021 results. I can't remember the last time this was done but I'm 44 years old and have been collecting since 2006.

Just voted a moment ago. Thanks for posting this survey, Randy. I didn't search "History" yet, but perhaps we can post the results from the LAST TIME this survey was taken. Should give us all a little insight into the future of our "hobby". I'll search the forum history tonight, unless someone beats me to it, and posts here. John
2011 Poll....looks like it had a good membership response with 331 votes. This is the only one I could find.

posted a "age poll" a year or 2 ago .. ...

10 years ago results:
Not as many young collectors (20-40 yo) as we had ten years ago (27% in 2011 vs 9% now). I wonder if that's due to young guys not collecting, or just coming to Facebook instead of here. Interesting....
I see that and I personally think they moved to Facebook and only visit here occasionally.I notice more and more younger guys collecting at gas shows these last few years. I miss the good old days of Oldgas when this site was hopping.

I agree it's probably the Facebook phenomena that has changed our numbers. I have just about decided to leave Facebook anyway, too much politics and not enough down to earth collectors like we have always had here Might miss a few deals, but my shelves are full anyway!. I'm like you Rob, miss the old days.....GB
I will have to agree the the facebook site has attracted the wheeler dealers & pushy wannabes. Don’t get me wrong i have met a lot of good collectors and buyers and sellers there but also some deadbeats that don’t keep there word , slow to pay , back out , fail to communicate et’c. . Never had a bad situation on Old Gas and nothing but help and great satisfaction in all instances. That say’s a lot about how great this site and it’s members are . Solid place to be .Thanks to all who contribute to make the site what it is .
I’ve always liked the oldgas forum vs. the multiple groups on facebook. The commentary on oldgas is to the point and helpful. Being able to search through the old threads really helps to find answers for yourself and I usually wind up learning something new that I wasn’t even searching for. I fall into the category of a younger collector but I recommend this forum to anyone interested in Petroliana.
Yea there are what I think a lot more younger collectors than ever right now, thing is they think Oldgas is for old fudds that like to argue. And they spend theIr time on numerous Facebook pages arguing and selling the same sign over and over to each other
Thanks Randy for doing the poll...you are greatly appreciated!
Steve
I too think Facebook is more for the newer collectors and I use the word collectors loosely. Being one of the old farts I appreciate the calm and non politics of Oldgas. The knowledge here is priceless.
I am one of the guys in the last colum (80plus ) would like to hear from the other three and if they were collecting in the 70s when you cuold get things for free or little of nothing and didnt worry about repops

Well--if I make it to Jan.30th. I will be 86. Bought my first Shell globe for a twenty dollar bill in 1972.Yes some things were free when being phased out.
Okay, I turn 80 this week. I started collecting in 1970 via my neighbor farmer throwing away a very nice May West 5 gallon pump with perfect blue tinted cylinder. Painted it up and then displayed it at a local tractor/engine show. That's all that it took to get into the hobby without the aid of internet, books, and specialty petroleum shows. Have always done it as a hobby and never a business. Have met some of the nicest people on this site & other shows. Facebook to me is a big disappointment but I keep up with it. I gave up restoring pumps about 4 years ago until a good friend talked me into doing two pumps for him this winter! Memories and busted knuckles came back to me in a hurry!
