Well I bought my first pump, a 1950 Tokheim 39. I’m very happy with it, it is very straight and only has a few spots of minor surface rust.

My goal is to do a 100% rebuild to functioning condition. I have restored a few cars and power generators, so I’m not new to restoration work, just new to pumps.

The original paint color is red, so I would like to restore it to a brand that would have used red pumps in southern Missouri. Any suggestions?

I will update when I get it home and take it apart. Looking forward to learning about these pumps!

Ben

If you were buying 100 gas pumps you could have them painted what ever color you wanted; have any decals put on them you had, etc. If you were buying one pump from the inventory of the local Petroleum Equipment dealer, the pump was in a crate and the pump was painted red.

Hi Jack,

I will definitely have to purchase your book, it looks great. I am looking forward to getting the pump disassembled and I'm sure I will have a lot of questions.

Hey Ben welcome to Old Gas.. I sent you a PM (click on the blinking red and white envelope logo upper right corner). I salute your intentions to get the pump running again. Don't know of many guys that have done that yet. Neil

A few things to keep in mind. If you intend to make the pump functional are you intending to pump gasoline through the pump? If so, you will be required to have a number of permits to do so, possibly some Federal permits. Also back in the late 1990s the Federal Government required that all existing in ground tanks to be removed.

There are some of us that restore their pumps with all the insides, but most of us removed the pumping mechanisms, mostly because the pumps are usually stored insides and there is about one gallon of old, very bad smelling old gasoline. You don't want that dripping on the floor of your Man Cave. There is a person here on Old Gas that sells a setup that allows the number to turn., making it look like gasoline is being pumped through the unit.

Thanks for the info, definitely a few things to consider.

Right now I’m trying to determine the original paint scheme/brand.
After sanding, the side and top panels have a grey primer base, then red, then blue.
The front and back panels have grey primer, then yellow, then blue, then green, then grey, then blue. Is it safe to assume the front and back doors have been replaced?

The internals and frame are a red primer, and the base is black.

There was originally a lead sign on each side panel. The doors don’t have any other holes than the standard four small holes for the lead sign (they are currently covered by the MFA decal.).

Also, would a Tokheim 1063 be the correct nozzle for this pump?

Yes the 1063 is the right nozzle.

great pump to restore!
Posted By: Myers B Re: New guy with a Tokheim 39 - Tue Dec 11 2018 09:15 PM
Thanks!

I think I have decided on a Mobilgas Special red and white paint scheme.

The front and back doors have never been drilled for an ad sign. Only the small lead signs. Would a decal be more fitting for a 50s pump? If not I think I will drill out the holes for a porcelain ad sign, since there are no remnants of painted or decal logos on these doors.

I'll take $50, if you pay shipping and paypal fees
(if there are any). It's all free and works as it should.
