When you say wrapped cans, please explain and how can you tell?
Posted By: Tankar Re: Oil can Collectors - Tue Feb 21 2017 03:20 PM
A wrapped can means it has a vinyl wrap on an old can. Means junk.
Posted By: advertologist Re: Oil can Collectors - Tue Feb 21 2017 03:28 PM
look at the photo, the art work doesn't line up .. ... cool

Paper wrapper on metal can.
The guy probably doesn't even know.

Was there ever such cans at all?? Or were all oil cans printed directly on the can?
Posted By: Cold Pizza Re: Oil can Collectors - Tue Feb 21 2017 04:26 PM
I call those Campbell souped up cans.
Posted By: intagas Re: Oil can Collectors - Tue Feb 21 2017 05:09 PM
Vinyl not paper. That one is an obvious fake, but it will sell for big money to some fool. The others look ok.
Posted By: miles1 Re: Oil can Collectors - Tue Feb 21 2017 05:46 PM
ha! that's funny-I saw it and skipped over it 'cause it looked like a dopey homemade piece. I had no idea that someone would go to these lengths to deceive. -these guys are terrible!!!

I bought a qt from him and have yet to receive it, I saw this on another place as well. qt cans where designed in 1938 and the car is from the 20s. If essex was still around then it would have been that model year car not an old one.

The Essex was a brand of automobile produced by the Essex Motor Company between 1918 and 1922 and by Hudson Motor Company of Detroit, Michigan between 1922 and 1933.

Thanks for the info..
Are all cans with that "gap" in the art work fake?

I presume "gap", your talking about the soldered seam-
when the art work of the can doesn't line up from one side of the soldered seam too the other, wrap was applied crooked-
a dead giveaway- this isn't always the case & includes crimped seam cans also- most wraps are applied perfect, you better know what your looking for- take finger nail & scrape around seam area on any can of question .. ... cool
Posted By: rustystuff Re: Oil can Collectors - Thu Feb 23 2017 04:06 PM
Thanks Randy..
So just to be clear. This Essex can is deemed a fake due to the fact that the art work doesn't line up?
Not that it has a soldered seam (gap) and the art work doesn't touch like a crimped can.
Right?

there are 3 or 4 reasons why that essex can isn't real
they made the last essex in '33 first year of the qt cans
& was owned by hudson, no mention of hudson motor co. on can
why would they put a 20's car on the can,
top & bottom of that can aren't right
oil or grease added too top & bottom rim of can
too make it look authentic- crimped seam cans came along later - don't know if seller is sleeping well but he's eating good .. ... cool

Can't believe what someone paid for that can. Highway robbery with the Essex's as a get away car for $836.98!
