Hello everyone, I need some advice/ ideas from you experienced guys. I have a chance to buy a complete Esso sign including the original pole. Problem is the owner says they couldn't get the sign arm to come apart from the main pole. He told me the main pole is 24' and the arm the sign hangs on is twelve'. I was wondering if there are tricks taking these apart and if I'm not able too. some good ideas to haul something that would end up that wide. It's not a short haul at least 2 hours. Thank you for your help
24ft pole with a 12ft side arm? seems large to me. most sign poles are around 18ft total in height. is this a more modern sign pole from the 80s era?
No it's an older fluted pole. I was just going off dimensions owner gave as I have no experience with these. Thanks..18' sounds much better
going by your name I would think cutting and welding would be an option no????
That's definitely an option.are the old poles cast iron?
the older fluted poles are quite tall, I think the last one I came across was for a Shell neon and it was like 22ft tall, so the height could certainly be correct.... but I'd have him double check the 12ft side arm measurement.
I have 2 of these and both are over 21'. I have a 20' tandem axle trailer with double lift gates with a space in the center, not 1 solid gate. I hauled ours with the arm straight up and strapped the upper arm of the pole to the lift ramp. Keep in mind legal haul height in SC is 13'6". Any low hanging lines or limbs could create an issue. Also had to put a 6x6 piece under it so the arm piece that sticks out the back wouldn't be stabbing the trailer deck. You can tilt it a little to reduce height, but the key here is the space between the 2 lift ramps.
This is the pole in question. Thanks for the ideas!
hard to tell from pics... but the arm pole doesnt look original to the vertical pole. if it were me, id cut the arm piece off and re-attach when you're back home.
Yeah I need work on my picture posting.thanks for the ideas!
Could it be cut, sleeved then plug welded?
I would do one of two things. As already said cut it off or cut to the measurement you intend to use. Your not going to need 12 ft. are you? Hang a red flag on it and play stupid if you get stopped.
