DON'T TACK RAG IT, JUST BLOW IT OFF!!!!!!!!!!

If you tack rag it or touch it with a rag you will cause hairs all over the fn thing..... Just use an air gun and blow it off real good, hit it with zinc oxicide / anti rust primer if you want, and then sealer, then paint. That is it.

Be sure that you have a filter/dryer on the air source before you use the air gun. Otherwise its possible to spray oil and/or water on your parts.

From my experience painting cars... I'd hit it with Ditzler DP, epoxy primer. The stuff goes on even before body filler, is waterproof and tough. Yes, blow it off first, shoot a couple medium coats then sand before using an epoxy, high solids primer (Ditzler NCP, but it's really spendy anymore). Then block it out, wet, with #400, then you're ready for color. Frame probably wouldn't need blocked out so you could prime, sand lighlty with 320 to 400 and shoot color.

I agree, blow off with dry air and use an epoxy primer on it.

Thanks, Phil

Defiantly have to use an epoxy or similar primer on the bare metal. I skip the sealer step on frames, use the primer as the sealer.

Use PPG dp90 as an etching sealer. Allow to flash off for 30-45 minutes depending on temp and shoot your basecoat right over it. No need for primer or additional sanding on the frame. This will protect from further corrosion and good adhesion.

I didn't think DP had etching capability. Did they change it? Generally etching primers have to be coated with a primer or sealer before the basecoat or topcoat.

No, dp90 is not an etching sealer. And as far as using a tack rag, yes I would use one. Don't know of a good tack rag that leaves hairs behind. As a body shop owner and have painted many of cars and pumps, after sandblasting I blow the items off good, wash them with a good wax/grease remover (to make sure no fingerprints and such are left behind) then tack off to remove anything remaining and then dust etch primer to protect it and then prime complete if needed.

Thanks
Mike

He is just painting the frame right now. No need to use a tack rag, no need to use multiple coats of primers/sealers/etch primers. $$$ down the drain. Epoxy prime and paint with a single stage acrylic enamel or urethane. Cheap, effective, done.

Doors and other exterior parts... that is a different story.

Everyone. Thanks for the various viewpoints. I'm hoping to paint the frame in a few days.

DPLF Epoxy Primer mixed 2:1 with DP401LF or DP402LF Catalyst provides an excellent corrosion–resistant primer. This primer provides excellent adhesion to many types of properly prepared metal, fiberglass and aluminum substrates, as well as plastic fillers. DPLF Epoxy Primer may also be used as a sealer and topcoated with most PPG Refinish products. DPLF Epoxy Primer comes in 6 colors:

I use this stuff all the time on my projects. Its a great product to use but not as great as the old stuff (DP90). DP90LF is designed to be a lead free "sealer" primer and used directly over bare metal. I would rough up the surface with a DA sander using 80 grit or bead blast it, which ever you prefer. Clean the surface good using a wax and grease remover. Mix the sealer according to the label, 2 parts DP90LF primer to 1 part DP402LF hardener. Let it sit in the pot for about 10 minutes, this gives the product time to mix and react with each other. Now its time to spray. Give it 2 coats for even coverage but 3 coats is even better. Don't forget to wait 5 minutes between coats to avoid drips, runs, or sags. I've heard you can apply body filler right over it but I suggest roughing up the surface with a grinder to promote adhesion. You can can even use it as a sealer right before painting your car, just reduce it with PPG DT870 reducer about 10% and it flows real nice. Hope this helps.
